Mexico City's Azteca Stadium hosts vibrant World Cup opening party

Mexico City launched the 2026 World Cup with a lively celebration at the legendary Azteca Stadium, dispelling fears of chaos and ushering in the tournament with a festive atmosphere. The opening ceremony, a vibrant spectacle lasting about 30 minutes, blended traditional Mexican attire and motifs with contemporary pop rhythms and a dazzling performance by Shakira.

Held at an altitude of over 2,200 meters, the Azteca Stadium, which previously hosted the World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986, came alive with a colorful display. Gold accents, a large stage, and performers dressed in gold dominated the field, which was initially covered by a large blue and yellow tarp. Traditional warrior dancers and singer Lila Downs welcomed the world to Mexico.

Despite previous concerns stemming from strikes and blockades, and a heavy police presence in the sprawling metropolis, the mood shifted to pure World Cup excitement. The ceremony culminated with Shakira singing the tournament anthem "Dai Dai" amidst a vibrant fireworks display. The host nation, "El Tri," is carrying immense hopes, having reached the quarterfinals in their previous two World Cup appearances on home soil.

Adding to the celebratory mood, Mexican football hero Guillermo Ochoa savored his personal moment, acknowledging the cheering fans as he prepared for his sixth World Cup. Coach Javier Aguirre opted for 26-year-old Raúl Rangel of Chivas for the opening match against South Africa, a rematch of their 2010 encounter. Wunderkind Gilberto Mora, just 17 years and 240 days old on opening day, also began on the bench.
