Mexico City transport saw 4.5 million extra trips during World Cup, says Finance Secretary

Mexico City's transportation networks experienced a surge of 4.5 million extra trips in June, coinciding with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Finance Secretary Juan Pablo de Botton. The System of Collective Transport (STC) Metro accounted for 2.5 million of these additional journeys.

De Botton highlighted that transport agencies collaborated with the Mexican Banking Association to enable credit and debit card payments. This initiative facilitated usage by tourists from 84 different countries, with visitors from the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and Brazil being among those using international cards for the Metro and Metrobús.

Additionally, Ecobici bike-share memberships saw a 47.5% increase in June, potentially linked to the temporary demand. The trolleybus network also reported a 21% rise in trips, as noted by Head of Government Clara Brugada, who stated, "The World Cup traveled by train, electromobility took us to the World Cup."
