PAN urges Mexico City to promote C5 program, seeking private camera integration

Mexico City's government is being urged to intensify efforts to inform residents about a program that allows them to voluntarily link their private security cameras to the city's C5 surveillance system. PAN deputy Olivia Garza stated that greater public awareness could significantly expand the city's surveillance network without additional government investment.

Garza highlighted that while the city currently manages approximately 113,000 cameras, estimates suggest between 600,000 and 900,000 private cameras are installed across homes, businesses, and industries. "If just one in 10 cameras installed by residents in their homes were voluntarily integrated into the C5, the video surveillance capacity would grow by tens of thousands of cameras without the government having to install a single one," she asserted.

The deputy emphasized the need for transparency regarding technical requirements, the registration process, and assurances for personal data protection. "The City already has hundreds of thousands of cameras installed by its own inhabitants. The problem is that most don't even know a program exists to connect them voluntarily to the C5," Garza said. She believes that clear information will foster the certainty and confidence needed for citizens to participate in the program, which she described as completely voluntary but currently unknown to many.
