Mexico Dominates Early Medal Count at Central American and Caribbean Games

Mexico has surged to the top of the medal standings at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, establishing a commanding lead by the midpoint of the second day of competition. The Mexican delegation secured a substantial advantage with 6 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals as the first finals concluded.

The day's events showcased Mexico's dominance across various sports. Melissa Márquez and Aylin Ibarra clinched the first gold medal for Mexico in the lightweight women's double sculls rowing event. The women's recurve archery team, featuring Alejandra Valencia, Ángela Ruiz, and Ana Paula Vázquez, continued Mexico's success with another gold. The men's archery team also secured a gold medal in the same discipline, with Matías Grande, Raúl Rodríguez, and Francisco Padilla leading the charge.

Further adding to Mexico's tally, the mixed badminton team triumphed over Guatemala in the final. In open water swimming, Paulo Strehlke won the 10-kilometer race, and in taekwondo, William Arroyo secured gold in the poomsae category.

While Mexico leads, Cuba has made a strong showing, provisionally securing 4 gold and 4 bronze medals. Venezuela follows in third place with 2 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals. A notable aspect of the rowing competition at the Presa de Rincón reservoir was the challenging conditions. Unexpected wind generated significant waves on the mountain lake, forcing rowers to adapt their techniques. Márquez and Ibarra successfully navigated these turbulent waters, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 22.21 seconds, ahead of Venezuelan and Cuban competitors.
