Mexico establishes permanent task force for avocado exports amid security concerns

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has guaranteed the safety of avocado inspectors, producers, and packers in Michoacán, following the U.S.'s partial resumption of exports. A permanent task force has been established to ensure the security of the avocado export process.

The U.S. had suspended inspections in Michoacán, citing threats against some inspectors. President Sheinbaum noted that while extortion has decreased in some areas around Uruapan, it had increased in others over the past month. The government met with producers and packers to address these concerns, promising full security for those who had received threats.

There is a zone where there is greater surveillance, around Uruapan, where extortion has decreased significantly, but there is another zone where in the last month issues like extortion had grown.

The newly formed task force will work continuously to guarantee avocado exports and the safety of all individuals involved. When asked about potential criminal groups behind the threats, Sheinbaum deferred the matter to the Ministry of Security for an official statement.
