Mexico expresses solidarity with the people and Government of Indonesia after magnitude 7.7 earthquake

Mexico has conveyed its solidarity with Indonesia after a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the country's southern region. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) issued a statement on Friday expressing sympathy for the Indonesian people and government.

Through its embassy in Indonesia, the SRE is closely monitoring the developing situation following the seismic event. The ministry confirmed that, as of its statement, no reports of Mexican nationals being affected had been received. It advised all Mexican citizens in the affected region to adhere to local guidance and stay informed through official channels. The embassy's emergency contact number was reiterated for any Mexicans requiring consular assistance or protection.

The earthquake's preliminary impact includes at least two fatalities and one person injured. The tremor occurred near the coast of Flores Island, in the eastern part of the archipelago. Initial reports from Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) indicated that several buildings collapsed in various locations on Flores Island, with the city of Maumere, situated approximately 100 kilometers from the epicenter, also experiencing damage.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed damage to numerous buildings and the evacuation of affected residents. The agency also reported that 37 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 3.6 to 6.2, had been recorded. Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly susceptible to seismic and volcanic activity due to its position at the convergence of tectonic plates.
