México promete cero impunidad en caso de periodista asesinado en el sur del país

Mexico's government has vowed to ensure zero impunity in the case of journalist Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar, who was murdered in the southern state of Oaxaca. The Attorney General's Office has assumed full responsibility for investigating the crime, signaling a federal commitment to addressing the killing.

Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez stated that President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued clear instructions to avoid impunity, mirroring the government's approach in other cases. Rodríguez confirmed plans for meetings with Leyva Aguilar's family and members of the journalistic community, who have demanded justice and action.

Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch elaborated that the federal security cabinet will collaborate with the Attorney General's Office on the investigation. While the inquiry is in its early stages, the federal government's full assumption of the case underscores its seriousness.

The announcement follows criticism from Amnesty International, which condemned the murder and highlighted that state and federal authorities had prior knowledge of death threats against Leyva Aguilar for approximately a year. Reporteros Sin Fronteras also noted that the journalist had repeatedly reported the risks associated with his work. Both organizations are demanding a prompt, thorough, and independent investigation that considers his journalistic work, previous threats, and stigmatization campaigns against him.
