Mexico’s auto production falls 1.43% in August as exports rise 1.26%

Mexico’s vehicle production declined in August, but exports recovered from the sharper drop recorded in July. The country produced 344,940 light vehicles during the month, 1.43% fewer than in August 2025, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, or Inegi.

The monthly total represented 5,011 fewer vehicles than a year earlier. Exports moved in the opposite direction, rising 1.26% to 300,475 units, an increase of 3,741 vehicles from August 2025.

The export result marked an improvement over July, when shipments fell 9.69% year on year to 261,534 units. Production also declined 2.19% that month, to 302,673 vehicles.

Through the first eight months of the year, Mexican plants produced 2,645,140 light vehicles, down 0.72% from the same period in 2025. Light trucks accounted for 79.3% of production, with 2,097,224 units, while passenger cars represented 20.7%, with 547,916.

Cumulative exports reached 2,251,254 vehicles, a decline of just 0.06%, or 1,262 units, from the 2,252,516 shipped in the first eight months of 2025. The United States remained the dominant destination, taking 1,716,610 vehicles, or 76.3% of the total. Canada received 281,502, followed by Germany with 59,422 and Brazil with 38,956.

Domestic sales offered a stronger result. August sales rose 2.23% year on year to 129,362 vehicles. Sales for January through August reached 1,014,715, up 4.68% from the same period last year. The figures come from the administrative registry for Mexico’s light-vehicle industry, which includes data from 22 companies affiliated with the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry.
