Mexico's cruise tourism surges 17.1% in first half of 2026

Mexico's tourism sector is experiencing a significant boom in cruise ship arrivals, with the country hosting 6.5 million passengers during the first six months of 2026. This figure represents a robust 17.1% increase compared to the same period last year, signaling strong international confidence in Mexico as a premier cruise destination.

The surge in passenger numbers is complemented by a 12.2% rise in port arrivals, totaling 1,839 calls to Mexican ports. The average number of passengers per cruise ship also saw a healthy increase of 4.3%, climbing from 3,406 in 2025 to 3,554 in 2026. This indicates higher occupancy rates and greater capacity utilization on the vessels docking in Mexico.

The Pacific coast region emerged as the most dynamic area for cruise tourism. It recorded 2,257,884 passengers and 680 arrivals, marking substantial year-on-year growth of 36.4% and 19.9%, respectively. Puerto Chiapas led this expansion with impressive gains of 90.2% in passengers and 71.4% in cruise arrivals. Mazatlán and Cabo San Lucas also reported significant increases, with passenger numbers rising by 69.2% and 64.5%, respectively.

In the Gulf-Caribbean region, 4.3 million passengers and 1,159 arrivals were registered, showing an 8.9% and 8.1% increase, respectively. Progreso in Yucatán saw a 21.6% rise in passengers, while Cozumel in Quintana Roo experienced growth of 10%. Although the Gulf-Caribbean region handled the majority of travelers and calls, the Pacific region's accelerated growth highlights its increasing importance in Mexico's cruise tourism landscape. The Ministry of Tourism emphasized that this expansion underscores the sector's potential to attract more visitors, boost economic benefits, and create more opportunities in port destinations.
