Mexico's President Proposes Ban on Dual Nationality for Governors and President

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has put forward a significant reform proposal aimed at barring governors and the federal president from holding dual nationality. This initiative, announced during her Tuesday press conference at the National Palace, directly references the ongoing case of former Tamaulipas governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, who is currently a fugitive from justice.

Sheinbaum explicitly linked the proposal to Cabeza de Vaca's situation, noting his dual Mexican-American nationality and questioning whether such a status should be permissible for state governors. She stated, "For why would you have dual nationality if you represent the people of Mexico? To be a governor or governor, why would you have the nationality of another country?" The President also raised the question of whether the Mexican constitution prohibits the president from holding dual nationality, suggesting it should be prohibited to ensure undivided loyalty.

The President argued that holding dual nationality could create conflicts of interest and undermine the representatives' commitment to Mexico. She emphasized the importance of honesty in public office and accused "conservatism" of hypocrisy regarding cases like that of Rubén Rocha Moya. The proposed reform seeks to reinforce national identity and commitment among the country's highest elected officials, ensuring they represent Mexico's interests exclusively.
