Mexico to suspend phone lines for unregistered numbers in August

Mexico is enforcing a mandatory registration of mobile phone numbers linked to the CURP, or unique population registry code, with initial service suspensions set to begin in August for users who fail to comply. The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) confirmed the process remains active following an earlier extension, warning that non-compliance will lead to temporary line suspension.

The registration initiative is part of a broader strategy to create a national registry of mobile lines and reduce anonymity, thereby combating crimes such as fraud and telephone extortion. According to the official calendar released by the CRT and the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPC), the first group of users required to register are those whose mobile numbers end in 0 or 1.

Users with numbers ending in 0 have until August 15 to complete the registration, while those with numbers ending in 1 must do so by August 31. Failure to meet these deadlines will result in the suspension of their lines, meaning they will be unable to make or receive calls or texts, though emergency calls will remain accessible. The registration process itself is free and can be completed online or in person through mobile carriers.

The overall registration timeline extends to December 2026, with a staggered approach based on the last digit of the phone number. The CRT and SSPC emphasize that no entity is authorized to charge for this procedure. Online registration involves visiting the CRT's official portal or the mobile operator's website, selecting the registration option, accepting terms, and providing a verification code sent via SMS. Users will also need to take a selfie and photograph a valid official ID.
