MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli says Turkey needs a new constitution

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli says Turkey’s political process has reached a powerful stage, pointing to broad parliamentary agreement and what he described as growing social solidarity.

“Frankly, I did not expect the figure of 467,” Bahçeli said, referring to the vote. He argued that the level of support helped widen social consensus and strengthen solidarity. He said a parliamentary commission had worked with near-complete participation and representation, holding 21 meetings under the leadership of the parliament speaker.

Bahçeli connected the process to the goal of a “Turkey without terrorism.” He said Turkey had made significant progress in fighting terrorism, although separatist activities had created provocations and tensions. He traced the process to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s October 1, 2024, address at the opening of parliament, which called for cooperation between the governing party and the opposition.

He recalled that he later approached members of the DEM Party after a condolence gesture and shook hands with them. Bahçeli said the moment attracted public attention and was followed by calls in the DEM parliamentary group for the PKK to dissolve and abandon its weapons. Delegations then travelled to İmralı, and further contacts accelerated the process.

Bahçeli also said party officials in eastern and southeastern Turkey had received a stream of visits from tribal leaders, community figures and people from different sections of society. He described the contacts as producing extensive social rapprochement. His remarks also included a call for a new constitution and an emphasis on Turkey’s presidential government system.
