MHP official says Selahattin Demirtaş covered by amnesty law

A journalist has reported that a prominent official from Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) sent a note clarifying the status of imprisoned former Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş under a newly approved amnesty law.

Journalist Alişer Delek stated on Habertürk TV that MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız sent him a message during the broadcast. Delek had previously commented on the uncertainty surrounding Demirtaş's release, suggesting that while his brother, Nurettin Demirtaş, who allegedly joined the "mountain ranks" (a term often used for the PKK), might be released, Selahattin Demirtaş's situation remained unclear.

Yıldız's note, as relayed by Delek, explicitly stated: "Selahattin Demirtaş is within the scope of the law." This intervention appears to address and quell speculation about whether Demirtaş, who is imprisoned and was a former co-chair of the HDP, would benefit from the recently passed "framework law."

Earlier, Selahattin Demirtaş's lawyer, Mahsuni Karaman, had expressed confidence on social media that Demirtaş and his colleagues, imprisoned under Article 302 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK 302), would be released once the regulation came into effect, citing no legal hesitation. The MHP's clarification, however, directly addresses the public discourse and potential legal ambiguities surrounding high-profile cases affected by the amnesty.
