Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" to get a sequel

Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to its highly successful Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael." The production company revealed plans for a second installment, with filming anticipated to commence either late this year or in early 2027. Variety reported that the new film could potentially be released by late next year or early 2028.

The first film, "Michael," starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, has achieved remarkable financial success, grossing over $1.016 billion globally. This figure includes $372 million from North America and $643 million from international markets, cementing its status as the highest-grossing biopic in cinema history. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the initial movie chronicled Jackson's journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his superstardom, concluding with his 1987 Bad tour.

It remains uncertain which period of Jackson's life the second film will explore. The production faced challenges during the making of the first movie when Jackson's estate lawyers discovered a clause preventing the depiction of one of his accusers in any film, forcing a significant rewrite. However, Adam Fogelson, a studio executive, indicated that some of the material cut from the first film, particularly large musical sequences, could be incorporated into the upcoming sequel.

"We have several sequences, especially some big musical sequences, that were shot previously and will almost certainly be incorporated," Fogelson stated during a call with investors. "Right now, we are focusing primarily on how we can ensure that we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest and best possible sequel. That's what the audience will want and what they deserve after the experience we gave them the first time."
