Migrant deaths surge on Mediterranean routes despite falling arrivals

Migrant deaths and disappearances on the central and eastern Mediterranean routes have dramatically increased in the first four months of 2026. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a 111% surge in fatalities on the central Mediterranean route, reaching 821 deaths or disappearances, even as arrivals dropped by 46% to 8,577 people.

Harsh weather, conflicts, economic pressures, and shifting migration policies are altering global migration patterns. January saw over half of the central Mediterranean deaths, with 430 fatalities attributed to Cyclone Harry. On the eastern Mediterranean route, 244 deaths were recorded, a 259% increase compared to the same period last year, with many tragedies occurring near the island of Crete.

While arrivals in Europe have generally decreased on some key routes, like the West African Atlantic route to Spain (down 78%), other routes have seen increases. Arrivals in Spain via the western Mediterranean route rose 66%, largely due to a threefold increase in border crossings to Ceuta and Melilla. The Horn of Africa-Yemen route saw a 9% increase in arrivals, reaching 70,200 people.

The IOM noted that while attention often focuses on specific routes, nearly half of the world's 304 million international migrants live within their own regions, moving for work, family, education, and safety. In Central America, northbound movement through Panama's Darien Gap has nearly halted, with only 135 crossings registered. Conflict in the Middle East has also impacted mobility, with significant population displacement in Lebanon and increased returns to Syria.
