Milei Appoints Diego Santilli as Chief of Cabinet Following Adorni's Resignation

Argentine President Javier Milei has appointed Diego Santilli as the new Chief of Cabinet, succeeding Manuel Adorni, who resigned Saturday amid a swiftly progressing investigation into alleged illicit enrichment.

Milei announced the appointment on social media platform X, posting a photo with Santilli and Secretary General of the Presidency Karina Milei, stating they were outlining the foundations for an orderly transition. Santilli, a 58-year-old public accountant and a prominent figure who joined Milei's La Libertad Avanza from the conservative Pro party, had been serving as Minister of the Interior since November.

Santilli's move to Chief of Cabinet follows Adorni's departure. Adorni's tenure became mired in a judicial case initiated in March after reports surfaced of lavish spending on travel and properties far exceeding his declared income. Despite the escalating scandal, which reportedly impacted the government's image, caused internal friction, and led to a degree of paralysis within the ministerial cabinet, Milei had consistently defended Adorni.

With this new appointment, Milei seeks to close this political crisis and reassert control over the Executive's communication and agenda, which were significantly affected by the scandal. Santilli previously served as a national deputy from 2021 to 2025 and led La Libertad Avanza's candidate list for the province of Buenos Aires in the 2025 legislative elections, a move that solidified the rapprochement between Milei and former President Mauricio Macri, whose political force Santilli had been a key figure in for over two decades.

Before joining the national government, Santilli held various positions within the Buenos Aires city administration under Presidents Macri and Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, including Minister of Environment and Public Space, Minister of Justice and Security, and Deputy Head of Government between 2015 and 2021. According to the president's announcement, the new Chief of Cabinet will assume his duties on Tuesday.
