Milei Appoints Former Mayor Gennuso to Lead Atomic Energy Commission Amid Restructuring

Argentine President Javier Milei has appointed Gustavo Gennuso, the former mayor of Bariloche, as the new vice president of the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA). The appointment, formalized by Decree 673/2026, places a key regional figure within a national body of significant technical and political importance. Gennuso, a nuclear engineer, previously led Bariloche and has recently been aligning himself with Milei's political movement.

The CNEA is currently undergoing a massive restructuring mandated by Decree 655/2026, which slashes its functional structure by nearly 58%. This "optimization" process has already sparked strong union opposition, including protests and the occupation of the CNEA's Buenos Aires headquarters, following the non-renewal of numerous contracts. While the government defends the cuts as necessary to eliminate "overstaffing," unions decry it as a deliberate dismantling potentially paving the way for privatization.

Gennuso's appointment to the CNEA's second-highest position follows his June nomination as president of the Administrative Council of Fundación Intecnus, a prominent nuclear medicine center linked to CNEA in Bariloche. This move is seen as a direct endorsement of Gennuso by the Milei administration and a strategic consolidation of La Libertad Avanza's influence in the Río Negro province. It directly challenges the provincial government led by Governor Alberto Weretilneck, whom Gennuso has openly confronted.

This development is expected to significantly reshape the political landscape in Río Negro for the 2027 elections. Gennuso's integration into the national structure bolsters La Libertad Avanza's efforts to recruit provincial figures, adding to existing members like Senator Enzo Fullone and Deputy Aníbal Tortoriello. The appointment weakens the Juntos Somos Río Negro (JSRN) party, especially after key figures associated with Gennuso, such as legislator Marcela González Abdala, recently joined the libertarian party. With La Libertad Avanza now recognized as a provincial party, Gennuso emerges as a strong contender to influence the region's political future.
