Milei: Energy and mining to fund export tax cuts in Argentina

Argentine President Javier Milei declared at the 138th Rural Exhibition that the energy and mining sectors will finance the reduction of export taxes, a move that drew a significant ovation from agricultural producers. "We are going to lower them," Milei stated, responding directly to Nicolás Pino, president of the Argentine Rural Society, who had demanded the permanent elimination of these taxes.

Milei specified that growth in the energy and mining industries would "finance" the tax cuts. He entered the exhibition grounds accompanied by key members of his administration, including the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, Chief of Staff Diego Santilli, and Minister of Economy Luis Caputo. From the official box, they listened as Pino reiterated the producers' primary demand regarding export taxes.

Pino noted that the state has collected approximately $215 billion since 2002 through export duties. He highlighted that the current administration's reductions have allowed producers to retain about $6 billion, which has been reinvested in genetics, machinery, pastures, and improvements, thereby boosting production and rural employment.

Despite the focus on export taxes, Pino expressed an "optimistic but objective, critical but constructive" stance on the economy. He also urged provincial and municipal leaders to reduce tax burdens, criticizing provincial income taxes, road tolls that don't yield visible works, and taxes on goods transport between provinces, which he termed "internal customs."

Milei's address focused on his administration's measures, particularly the reduction of export duties as a cornerstone of agricultural recovery. He emphasized that his government has completely eliminated export duties for dairy products, regional economies, processed meats, pork, and certain beef categories. Furthermore, he introduced a schedule for reducing taxes on major crops, providing producers with unprecedented predictability regarding their tax obligations.
