Milei's and Macri's Parties Strengthen Ties Ahead of 2027 Presidential Elections

Key figures from Argentina's ruling ultranationalist La Libertad Avanza (LLA) party and the conservative Republican Proposal (Pro) party convened this week to solidify their alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. The meeting, held at the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace, aimed to "shield the change" and foster joint work between the two political forces.

Participants included Argentine Chief of Staff Diego Santilli, LLA Vice President and Chamber of Deputies President Martín Menem, and ruling party political leader Eduardo 'Lule' Menem. Representing Pro were the president of their bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, Cristian Ritondo, and the party's national secretary-general, Fernando de Andreis. This gathering followed a prior phone conversation between LLA president Karina Milei, President Javier Milei's sister, and former President Mauricio Macri.

According to a government statement, the meeting was productive and marked a significant first step toward collaborative efforts. Both parties affirmed a shared belief that Argentina must avoid returning to "populism," a clear reference to the Peronist movement, which was the main opposition force in the 2023 elections. This alignment is crucial as LLA, which led the government in Congress during its first two years, often relied on Pro's support for passing its reform agenda.

Plans are in place for regular bi-weekly meetings to continue this strategic dialogue and to coordinate parliamentary efforts for upcoming reforms. The alliance's formation is particularly notable given the political shifts since the 2023 elections, where Pro initially ran its own candidate before endorsing Milei in the second round. The relationship between Milei and Macri has seen fluctuations, but Macri has consistently supported the direction of Milei's economic policies.
