Milei Thanks Messi After His Argentina Retirement: ‘Thank You, Impossible Man’

Javier Milei thanked Lionel Messi after the forward announced his retirement from Argentina’s national team, calling him an “impossible man” in an Instagram post beside a photo of Messi wearing the team’s No. 10 shirt.

The president also shared a 2018 interview in which he described Messi as “impossible,” referring to the player’s exceptional ability on the field. Milei has previously called Messi the greatest footballer of all time.

Former President Mauricio Macri joined the tributes, describing Messi as a lasting example of effort, humility and talent. Daniel Scioli, the government’s secretary for tourism, environment and sports, called him an “eternal legend” and said his legacy with the national team would remain with Argentina forever.

The messages followed a wave of recognition for Messi after he brought his more than two-decade international career to an end. Association of Argentine Football president Claudio Tapia called him a legend, while players including Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernández thanked him for his career and leadership.

Messi announced his decision in an emotional handwritten letter. “I gave everything I had, I have nothing more to give, and besides, some very talented young players are coming through who deserve to be there,” he wrote. At 39, he leaves the national team as Argentina’s record holder for appearances, goals and assists, with 207 matches, 125 goals and 68 assists. He won two Copa América titles, the Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup.
