Military Pay: Matawalle applauds Tinubu as privates get 80%, colonels 50%, generals 30% raise

Nigeria's military personnel are set to receive a substantial salary increase following approval from President Bola Tinubu. The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, commended the president, describing the decision as a "landmark demonstration of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, morale and operational effectiveness" of the armed forces.

Matawalle stated that the salary review had been a priority for the current administration, and he personally championed the initiative. He expressed gratitude for Tinubu's "visionary leadership and commitment to the welfare of military personnel," noting it reflects a passion for building a motivated, resilient, and professional armed forces capable of addressing Nigeria's security challenges.

The new salary package will benefit approximately 250,000 personnel, with increases taking effect from September 1, 2026. Personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will see an 80% raise. Warrant Officers to Colonels will receive a 50% increase, while senior officers above the rank of Colonel, including Generals, will get a 30% raise.

Matawalle emphasized that the salary review is part of the government's broader efforts to improve the welfare of troops engaged in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats. The minister urged service members to view the increase as recognition of their sacrifices and a renewed call to service. He added that the government would continue to prioritize troop welfare while modernizing the armed forces with advanced weapons, equipment, and technological tools to enhance operational effectiveness.
