Millionaires in white coats: One in ten councilors who are doctors earned over a million

An analysis utilizing artificial intelligence has revealed that approximately 10% of local councilors in Poland are doctors who earned over one million Polish zloty in 2025. The study focused on doctors who hold councilor mandates, filed wealth declarations for 2025, exceeded the million-zloty income threshold, and performed at least some work in publicly funded healthcare facilities, such as hospitals or clinics with National Health Fund (NFZ) contracts.

Zbigniew Rok, the vice-chairman of the Zawiercie county council, reported the highest income among these medical professionals, earning 2.15 million zloty in 2025. Rok, who has nearly 30 years of professional experience, is a co-owner of a private clinic specializing in gastroscopy and colonoscopy that also operates under an NFZ contract. Attempts to obtain a comment from him were unsuccessful.

The analysis highlights that most of the doctors on this list are seasoned professionals, averaging 57 years old with over three decades of experience. Many hold multiple specializations, possess academic degrees, and lead hospital departments or manage their own medical practices. An example is Dr. Wojciech Homenda, a pioneer in bone marrow transplantation in Słupsk, who earned approximately 1.3 million zloty in 2025.

Dawid Kacprzyk stands out as an exception; he is the youngest doctor on the list, lacking a specialization, and only qualified two years ago. The report also noted one female doctor facing criminal charges for allegedly falsifying sick leave notes. She resigned from her mandate, and her trial is scheduled for the autumn. Eight of the 23 doctor-councilors own or co-own private healthcare facilities that also provide services through NFZ contracts, often ensuring access to specialists in smaller towns. Beata Hausman, a councilor from Wałbrzych county and clinic owner, reported about 1.5 million zloty in income, describing her practice as a family business. Geriatrician Tomasz Wantuła, a councilor from Kędzierzyn-Koźle county, emphasized the need for humility despite high earnings, stating, "We earn a lot today, and I think some people might have gotten carried away. But not everyone."
