Minahasa People's School Student Proves Talent, Qualifies for National Biology Olympiad Representing North Sulawesi

Junivia Vanecia Tulung, a student from Sekolah Rakyat Menengah Atas (SRMA) 44 Minahasa, has achieved a significant academic milestone by qualifying for the national Biology Olympiad, representing North Sulawesi Province.

Her success in the Provincial Science Olympiad (OSN-P) Sulut has earned her a spot in the national competition, scheduled from August 25-31, 2026. Jefta Makikui, the Principal of SRMA 44 Minahasa, expressed pride in Junivia's accomplishment, viewing it as concrete proof that students from their school can compete academically at higher levels.

Makikui explained that the school actively encourages participation in science competitions to challenge the perception of "Sekolah Rakyat" (People's Schools) as lagging institutions. "We want to build the self-confidence of our students so that they can compete equally at the national level," he stated. The school emphasizes that economic limitations should not hinder students from achieving high academic success, focusing on critical thinking, perseverance, and a fighting spirit.

Junivia comes from a modest family in Sonder District. Her father works in the fish business, with a monthly family income of approximately Rp1.5 million (around $100 USD). The family lives in rented accommodation and is registered as a recipient of the Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH), a social welfare program. Despite these circumstances, Junivia's determination to excel remained strong.

Her qualification for the national Olympiad serves as an inspiring example, demonstrating that SRMA 44 Minahasa's educational approach provides equal opportunities for children from less privileged backgrounds. Junivia's success underscores the potential within students from families receiving social assistance, proving they can shine and pursue their dreams.
