MIND ID Strengthens Group Decarbonization Amid Accelerated Mineral Downstreaming

State-owned mining holding company MIND ID is intensifying its decarbonization initiatives as Indonesia fast-tracks its mineral downstreaming program. The company aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15.5%, equivalent to approximately 2 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), by 2030. This target is set despite a projected near doubling of the group's operational energy needs within the next five years.

MIND ID anticipates its energy consumption will rise from about 149,000 terajoules (TJ) in 2026 to 293,000 TJ in 2030, an increase of over 90 percent. Without intervention, GHG emissions are expected to surge from 6,100 kilotons CO2e to 12,900 kilotons CO2e during the same period. This escalating energy demand is linked to several strategic projects, including new mines in Kalimantan, the development of an electric vehicle battery ecosystem in East Halmahera, aluminum facility expansions, smelter construction, and underground mining projects.

To mitigate emissions, MIND ID is pursuing a multi-pronged decarbonization strategy. This includes transitioning to low-carbon fuels, such as increasing biodiesel use from B35 to B40 and replacing High Speed Diesel (HSD) with liquefied natural gas (LNG). The company is also optimizing electricity usage from the national grid. Operationally, PT Bukit Asam Tbk has replaced fossil-fuel-powered dump trucks with Bucket Wheel Excavators for coal handling, reducing emissions by an estimated 5,200 tons CO2e annually. PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium has converted its baking plant fuel from HSD to LNG, cutting emissions by approximately 3,700 tons CO2e and improving energy efficiency.

Renewable energy is also a key focus. PT Indonesia Chemical Alumina is using palm kernel shell biomass co-firing to replace some coal, reducing emissions by about 560 tons CO2e. PT Timah Tbk has commissioned a 300-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar power plant, cutting emissions by an estimated 300 tons CO2e and boosting clean energy use. Beyond direct emission reductions, MIND ID is developing carbon offset schemes through nature-based solutions, utilizing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and participating in carbon trading.
