Ministry Clarifies Acting Teacher Appointments

The Ministry of Education has clarified that teachers currently serving in acting principal roles are not guaranteed permanent appointments. Their acting positions are temporary and can conclude once permanent heads are officially appointed to the vacant posts.

Navin Raj, Permanent Secretary for Education, addressed reports concerning acting appointments. He stated that only seven teachers' acting positions were discussed during a meeting with the Fiji Teachers Association, contrary to media reports mentioning 26 individuals. Raj emphasized that these acting appointments are subject to revocation when a permanent candidate is selected for the role.

He says he will continue to consult the two teachers’ unions as the process moves forward.

Raj confirmed that the ministry is following due process, which includes advertising vacant positions in due course. He committed to ongoing consultations with the two teachers' unions as the process progresses. The Permanent Secretary also appealed to the media to ensure accuracy in their reporting, noting that incorrect information can lead to public confusion.

Furthermore, Raj encouraged teachers to voice their concerns directly to the Ministry. This direct communication channel aims to address issues efficiently and prevent misunderstandings. The Ministry is focused on ensuring a transparent and fair process for filling school leadership positions.
