Ministry Official Urges Civil Service Police to Transform into Humane Public Service Frontliners

The Ministry of Home Affairs in Indonesia is pushing for a significant transformation of the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), urging them to become a leading force in public service delivery characterized by a humane approach. This directive was issued by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Tomsi Tohir, during the opening of a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop for Satpol PP and community protection members in Bogor, West Java.

Tohir stressed that the quality of interactions between Satpol PP officers and the public directly shapes perceptions of the government's overall performance. Therefore, he advocated for an approach that prioritizes empathy and service, likening it to a shop's display influencing customer perception. "If the display is good, people will see the shop as good, but if the display is bad, people will immediately label the shop as bad," Tohir stated.

The need for this transformation is underscored by the diverse backgrounds of Satpol PP members, who include contract workers, government contract employees (PPPK), and civil servants (ASN). The training is designed to standardize competency levels, reinforce understanding of operational procedures, and cultivate a professional and empathetic service culture. Beyond enhancing skills, Tohir encouraged Satpol PP to develop innovative services that directly benefit the community.

They should also engage in social actions, such as assisting children crossing roads or supporting humanitarian aid distribution, thereby strengthening their connection with citizens.
