Ministry: Taiwan Sugar Rigorously Checks Returned Problematic Oil with High Standards

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has strongly defended Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC) against allegations of knowingly accepting problematic crude oil that was later returned. The ministry stated that TSC implements a stringent, multi-layered quality control process that surpasses the standards set by the Food Safety Act.

According to the ministry, TSC samples and inspects raw materials at the supplier's premises. Only after confirming the absence of issues do they accept the goods. This rigorous process extends from the raw material stage through to the finished product, ensuring quality and safety. The ministry emphasized that TSC's commitment to customer reassurance means they hold themselves to high internal standards, referring to the company as a "good child" that self-inspects with high standards.

TSC always samples and inspects raw materials at the supplier's company. Only after confirming the goods are fine do they take delivery, and they inspect layer by layer from raw materials to finished products, which is superior to the Food Safety Act regulations.

In response to the controversy surrounding Zhonglian's problematic oil, the ministry highlighted TSC's proactive cooperation with regulatory authorities. They asserted that TSC's product management, from source to manufacturing, is strictly controlled, guaranteeing quality and safety. Furthermore, TSC has implemented precautionary product recalls in line with policy after the issue with Zhonglian's oil emerged.

The ministry provided details of TSC's testing procedures, noting that soybean raw materials and crude oil were tested multiple times between April and July. These tests, including checks for benzopyrene, reportedly met all relevant inspection and hygiene standards. Even though TSC is considered a victim in this incident, they reportedly rejected raw materials upon discovering non-compliance with inspection standards, even when it fell outside the scope of the Food Administration Act, further demonstrating their commitment to strict quality control.
