Minority demands accountability over welfare of Black Queens and Glasgow athletes

Ghana's parliamentary Minority is demanding a full accounting from the government regarding the welfare and management of athletes, citing serious concerns for those participating in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the national Black Queens team.

Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, in a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, 2026, said reports from members of Ghana’s Commonwealth Games contingent raised serious concerns about how athletes were being treated.

Reports from the Commonwealth Games contingent suggest athletes received airline tickets late, some without luggage allowances, and faced difficulties locating their bookings. This led to some athletes and officials missing flights, returning home, or resorting to alternative travel methods like trains and buses. Competition kits reportedly arrived so late that some athletes received them only after their events concluded, forcing others to seek private sponsorship or arrange their own equipment.

He alleged that some athletes received their airline tickets late, while others were issued tickets without luggage allowances or could not locate their tickets.

Further issues include a lack of clarity on per diem and medal bonuses for athletes traveling to Glasgow. Raincoats were allegedly not provided for outdoor event competitors. The Minority also raised questions about accommodation and supervision, claiming that while 90% of officials stayed at the Moxy Hotel, athletes were housed elsewhere without adequate oversight. A specific case highlighted involved a para-athlete allegedly checked out of his hotel prematurely without receiving his per diem, despite a late afternoon flight.

These issues with the Commonwealth Games contingent mirror ongoing complaints from the Black Queens regarding outstanding bonuses and per diem payments related to the Egypt 2025 WAFCON qualification and group stage performances. The Minority views these combined situations as indicative of a broader problem in managing national athletes and is calling for an independent investigation. They demand the immediate payment of all owed financial entitlements and a disclosure of the approved budget for Ghana's participation in the Commonwealth Games, detailing spending on travel, accommodation, kits, officials, per diems, and medal bonuses.
