Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin pledges friendship to new Majority Leader Agalga

Parliamentary Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has extended a hand of friendship to the newly appointed Majority Leader, James Agalga, vowing to foster consensus-building within the House. Afenyo-Markin assured Agalga that he would not obstruct his work as Leader of Government Business and instead offered support and a unique perspective to help him navigate his new role.

"You can find in me a good friend, James," Afenyo-Markin stated during the House's adjournment. He acknowledged that those who have not experienced leadership might misunderstand the nature of friendship in such positions, hinting at a "code of leadership" that Agalga would soon understand.

James, those who have not gone through the process of being leaders would not understand what I am saying because they have not been part of our club.

Agalga assumed the position of Majority Leader following a change announced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership. Afenyo-Markin described the role as a "very hot seat," where a leader might feel isolated and face dissenting views, sometimes even when knowing the truth.

But in any event, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority and that really is my job. But please, James, as you have come, do not attempt to infiltrate my back as a lot of people are causing turbulence all over the place, and please do not join that group.

Drawing from his own experiences, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the importance of seeking guidance from past leaders. He cited former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, with his extensive leadership tenure, and former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, who once said "compromise is not weakness." Afenyo-Markin emphasized that success in leadership is not solely reliant on one's own strength, underscoring the value of counsel from those who have navigated similar challenges.
