Mirko Lombardi, Italian Politician and Environmental Advocate, Dies at 76

Mirko Lombardi, a respected architect and former politician, has passed away at the age of 76. Lombardi served two terms as a councilor, first in Brescia and later in the Lombardy region, representing left-wing parties. He was a dedicated advocate for social and environmental justice, viewing these issues as intrinsically linked.

Born in Brescia in 1950, Lombardi pursued architecture at the University of Florence. His life was marked by active engagement, starting with the tenants' union and moving into politics with the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and later Rifondazione Comunista. In his national roles, he focused on housing, urban planning, labor, and environmental issues.

During his ten years as a city councilor in Brescia (1985-1995) and two terms as a regional councilor in Lombardy (1995-2005), Lombardi was a prominent figure. He was instrumental in the national founding of Sinistra Ecologia e Libertà (SEL). Throughout his time in regional government, he consistently fought against gas turbine power plants, championing the defense of local territories, public health, and the quality of life for residents.

Even after concluding his institutional roles, Lombardi remained active. He served on the board of ALER Brescia, was the city secretary for SEL, and co-founded the "Ripensare il mondo" association. He was involved in revitalizing the Brescia Natural Sciences Museum and, in recent years, pursued his passion for paleoanthropology through excavation campaigns in Tanzania's Olduvai Gorge. He was also a board member of the Luigi Micheletti Foundation. Lombardi is remembered as a consistent, learned, and tenacious individual who approached politics as a service rather than a profession.
