Missing South Korean Man in His 70s Found Dead in Stream After Search

A man in his 70s who left home to work in rice fields was found dead in a stream in Jeongeup, South Korea, about a day after he disappeared.

The man told his family at about 6:30 a.m. that he was going to work in the fields. When he did not return for a long time, relatives went to the field in Guryong-dong and found only his rubber shoes and shovel. They then notified police and emergency services.

The field stood near a waterway that extends toward Buk-myeon. Police and firefighters searched a stretch of about five kilometers before finding the man in vegetation along a stream, approximately four kilometers from the place where he disappeared.

Heavy rain had affected the Jeongeup area. The city recorded 201.4 millimeters of rain from Aug. 29 through 5 p.m. on Aug. 31, and a heavy-rain warning had been issued at one point. Police said they had found no indication of criminal involvement and were investigating the exact cause of death and how the incident occurred.
