Mitsubishi’s New Pajero May Get a Rally Performance Version, Concept Car Hints

Mitsubishi’s new-generation Pajero has returned with a ladder-frame chassis and diesel power aimed directly at the Toyota Land Cruiser 250. But the vehicle drawing the most attention at its launch was an unexpected concept car wearing red racing colors and Ralliart graphics.

The Pajero Rally Concept features 18-inch Work alloy wheels, Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires, a snorkel, and dedicated protective wheel arches and underbody guards. Its aggressive appearance immediately sparked speculation that Mitsubishi could develop a production Pajero Ralliart performance version.

The standard new Pajero shares its platform architecture with the Triton. It launches with a 2.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine producing 201 horsepower and 48.9 kilogram-metres of peak torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and Super Select 4WD II complete the drivetrain.

Mitsubishi product chief Kunitoshi Itagaki quickly tempered expectations. He said Ralliart’s racing heritage remains important to the brand and that Mitsubishi will continue evaluating performance experiences worthy of the name. However, he stated that “there is currently no concrete official Ralliart vehicle development plan.”

A performance version, if Mitsubishi eventually proceeds, could require a more powerful engine or a hybrid system. Until then, the rally concept is expected to serve only as a promotional or support vehicle. Enthusiasts may still be able to use official off-road aftermarket accessories to build customized Pajero vehicles.
