Modi Speaks with U.S. Vice President After New Tariffs on India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations. The dialogue took place amidst ongoing trade negotiations and the recent imposition of U.S. tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on imports from approximately 60 economies, including India.

According to a statement from India's Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders reviewed the progress of the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the U.S. They highlighted the sustained momentum in high-level engagements and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in key areas such as trade, defense, critical and emerging technologies, energy security, and critical minerals.

During the call, both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. Prime Minister Modi took the opportunity to extend warm congratulations to Vice President Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, on the recent birth of their son.

This conversation follows the U.S. administration's announcement of new levies on numerous countries as part of its tariff policy, adding to a previous temporary global tariff that expired in July. These U.S. actions are occurring in parallel with negotiations for a broader bilateral trade agreement between the two nations. India's government previously stated on July 13 that these discussions remain open and are progressing without significant obstacles.
