Mexico: 75% of Michoacán avocado packing plants cleared for export

Mexico's Agriculture Secretary, Julio Berdegué, announced that 75% of avocado packing plants in the western state of Michoacán have been authorized for export. This marks a significant step following the gradual resumption of U.S. activities that were suspended due to a security alert.

These authorized plants typically handle 85% of the state's avocado exports. Berdegué stated that discussions with the United States are continuing to achieve 100% restoration of export capabilities. The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, acknowledged the Mexican government's commitment to rapidly enhancing security in Michoacán, enabling the "immediate and gradual" restart of the export program.

The temporary suspension, which began earlier in the week, halted the certification and shipment of avocados to the U.S. This occurred after the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert concerning "threats against U.S. interests." U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors, responsible for verifying phytosanitary compliance at authorized packing facilities, were affected by the suspension.

Mexico is a leading global exporter of avocados, shipping over a million tons annually. In the first four months of 2026 alone, the country exported 501,824 tons of the fruit. The avocado trade is described as mutually beneficial for both Mexico and the United States.
