Moldova Implements Emergency Measures Amid Energy and Water Crisis

Moldova is implementing new measures to strengthen its energy security and protect water resources in response to regional energy supply reductions and a severe drought affecting the Nistru River. The National Crisis Management Commission approved these actions following the declaration of energy and hydrological alert statuses.

The decisions were adopted within the framework of the second meeting of the Commission, convened after the declaration, on July 28, of the energy alert status and the hydrological alert status.

The commission's decisions were based on assessments highlighting the need for enhanced preventive measures. Key concerns include diminished electricity availability due to reduced hydroelectric and nuclear output in neighboring countries, coupled with a significant hydrological deficit in the Nistru River basin. These factors necessitate a comprehensive approach to resource management.

To mitigate risks to the electricity supply, the state enterprise "Moldelectrica" will suspend commercial electricity exports between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM, prioritizing domestic needs during peak consumption hours. The goal is to prevent deficits and ensure essential services remain operational.

The analyses indicate a reduction in the availability of electricity in the region, determined by the decrease in hydroelectric and nuclear production in neighboring countries, as well as the worsening hydrological deficit in the Nistru River basin.

Furthermore, Moldova is accelerating procedures for connecting battery storage systems and new renewable energy sources to increase domestic production and storage capacity, thereby reducing reliance on regional market fluctuations. "Energocom," a state-owned energy company, will seek alternative electricity supply contracts, while "Moldelectrica" will engage with Romanian and Ukrainian energy operators for potential emergency assistance.

Temporary energy-saving measures are also being introduced for public authorities and public spaces during specific hours to encourage responsible consumption. These steps aim to ensure the availability of energy and water resources for the population and economy, particularly during periods of high demand.
