Moldova's parliament elects new prime minister

Moldova's parliament has elected 44-year-old V. Tofana as the country's new prime minister. Lawmakers from President Maia Sandu's pro-European Our Party voted in favor of Tofana's appointment. He succeeds Alexandru Munteanu, who unexpectedly resigned earlier in July after serving only eight months in office.

According to Moldovan media reports, Munteanu's resignation followed several scandals that implicated not only the government but also individuals close to President Sandu. The political turmoil comes as Moldova, a largely agrarian and impoverished nation, continues its bid to join the European Union. The country is strategically located between Ukraine and EU member Romania.

The region of Transnistria, which has been de facto separated from Moldova for over 30 years and is predominantly inhabited by Russian speakers, is considered a Moscow outpost. The ongoing political instability and scandals could impact Moldova's aspirations for closer integration with the West.
