Monkey Causes Havoc in Canelones Before Escaping Capture

Residents of Progreso, Canelones, experienced an unusual event when a small monkey appeared on a rural property, causing a stir before vanishing. The 77-year-old homeowner discovered the brown-furred primate on his land, where it had begun to feed on chicken eggs and fruits. The situation prompted a call to the police, who managed to locate the animal.

The animal had already caused several destructions, and was feeding on chicken eggs and fruits that are cultivated on the property.

However, the monkey proved elusive. As police coordinated with the local animal welfare department, the creature made its escape just as officials were arriving at the scene. This incident follows a similar, though ultimately successful, capture of another monkey in Aguas Corrientes approximately ten days earlier, according to the Intendencia de Canelones.

When the officials arrived at the house, the monkey had already left.

Adding to the unusual animal encounters in the region, authorities have also suspended the search for a puma that was reported loose near Zonamerica. While the puma has not been located, officials are maintaining monitoring in the area. The Intendencia suggests the possibility that the puma may have been a domesticated animal that escaped. Residents are urged to report any sightings to the authorities and avoid approaching the animals directly. These events, while seemingly isolated, highlight the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters in semi-rural areas and the resources required to manage them.
