Montevideo City-Peñarol match suspended due to stadium light failure

The opening match of the Torneo Clausura in Uruguay between Montevideo City Torque and Peñarol was suspended Saturday evening due to a critical failure in the stadium's lighting system. The game was scheduled to kick off at the Estadio Charrúa at 6:30 PM local time.

Shortly after the scheduled start, the match was initially delayed as the floodlights illuminating the pitch malfunctioned. Although the lights were temporarily restored, they subsequently failed again multiple times. This persistent issue led officials to make the decision to suspend the game entirely.

No new date has been announced for the postponed fixture. However, it is unlikely to be rescheduled within the next two weeks. Montevideo City Torque is set to compete in the Copa Sudamericana, facing Argentine club Tigre on August 12 and August 19, which complicates the domestic league's schedule.

The first round of the Torneo Clausura did see other matches played. Cerro Largo drew 1-1 with Juventud, Central Español secured a 1-0 victory over Progreso, and Liverpool narrowly defeated Albion by a single goal. The remaining fixtures for the first round are scheduled for Sunday and Monday.
