Morawiecki forms new parliamentary club after PiS exclusion

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his supporters have officially established a new parliamentary club named 'Rozwój Plus' in the Sejm. This move follows their formal exclusion from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party. The new club comprises 40 members of parliament and one senator, making it the third-largest political grouping in the current Sejm.

The formation of 'Rozwój Plus' stems from internal party conflicts, particularly concerning Morawiecki's association of the same name, founded in April. PiS leadership viewed the association as an attempt to build a new party using PiS resources. An earlier compromise, brokered by Jarosław Kaczyński, proposed a "two lungs" concept within PiS, with Morawiecki's faction and another led by Jacek Sasin.

However, the situation escalated when Morawiecki announced a programmatic meeting for his 'Rozwój Plus' association. This prompted the PiS leadership to issue an ultimatum on July 15: all PiS parliamentarians were required to sign a declaration renouncing their involvement in such associations, under threat of expulsion. While Sasin dissolved his 'Po Pierwsze Polska' association in response, Morawiecki refused to disband 'Rozwój Plus'.

On July 17, members of Morawiecki's association sent a letter to PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, asserting their goal was party unity and regaining support from groups that had drifted away. The letter was signed by 45 PiS politicians, including MPs, senators, and MEPs. A subsequent meeting between Kaczyński and Morawiecki did not resolve the dispute, with the party spokesperson confirming the ultimatum remained in effect.
