More applicants than available spots: not everyone will be able to start military service this year

Lithuania's military is experiencing a record surge in voluntary applications for mandatory initial service, with over 8,100 individuals expressing their desire to enlist this year. This overwhelming interest means that the available slots cannot accommodate everyone who wishes to serve. Arūnas Balčiūnas, director of the Conscription and Recruitment Service, expressed gratitude for the youth's commitment to national security but acknowledged the reality of limited capacity. He noted that nearly 4,400 people applied before the conscription lists were formed, and an additional 3,700 expressed a preference for earlier service. Balčiūnas stated that the high number of applicants reflects a growing understanding of their role in the universal defense system. However, he cautioned that not all applicants will be accepted due to the finite number of positions. The Lithuanian Armed Forces advises young people, particularly high school graduates and future students, not to put off their educational plans based on the expectation of starting military service this year. The military assures that students called for service can take academic leave and resume their studies afterward, with legal guarantees to preserve their study places.
