Morelos Civil Protection probes Tomza after Cuernavaca gas tanker explosion

Civil Protection in Morelos has launched an investigation into Tomza, Gas Titanium SA de CV, the company that owns the liquefied petroleum gas tanker involved in a serious explosion in the Granjas de Cuernavaca neighborhood. The incident left 22 people with second-degree burns and caused extensive damage.

Ubaldo González Carretes, the state coordinator for Civil Protection, confirmed that the tanker was traced to Tomza's fleet, prompting the immediate initiation of proceedings. He stated that the investigation aims to avoid interfering with the ongoing inquiry by the State Attorney General's Office. González Carretes indicated that potential sanctions for the company could be severe, possibly including closure, pending the investigation's outcome.

The explosion's impact extended approximately 200 meters along the road, damaging 35 homes, three of which are considered uninhabitable. Additionally, 11 vehicles, including four cars and a motorcycle, were destroyed. Animal welfare was also addressed, with three dogs and two cats receiving care, and 12 pigs and a goat monitored at the site.

Earlier reports had tentatively identified a Global Gas tanker in surveillance footage, but the state coordinator clarified that the vehicle definitively belongs to Tomza. The director of Civil Protection for Cuernavaca, Enrique Clement Gallardo, detailed the residential damage and noted that one minor might be transferred to the United States for specialized medical treatment.
