Moroccan Ambassador meets Megawati, recalls 66 years of strong ties

The strong and long-standing relationship between Indonesia and Morocco was celebrated during a meeting between Morocco's Ambassador to Indonesia, Redouane Houssaini, and former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The location of the Soekarno street is very famous in Rabat. Its location is close to the parliament building. So this street is very famous. This is a sign of love from Morocco.

Ambassador Houssaini recalled the historical significance of President Soekarno's visit to Rabat in 1960, where he was welcomed by King Mohammed V. In honor of that visit and Indonesia's support for African independence movements, Morocco named a major street in its capital, Rabat, "Rue Soukarno." Houssaini described the street's prominent location near the parliament building as a "sign of love from Morocco."

During their dialogue at Megawati's residence in Jakarta, Houssaini extended an invitation for her to visit Morocco, promising a tailored program. He noted the many similarities between the two nations and their established bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, culture, and education. Houssaini also mentioned that Indonesian students study at Morocco's historic Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in the 9th century, particularly in Islamic and Arab studies.

I wish and hope that Mrs. Megawati can visit Morocco. We will prepare a suitable program for Mrs. Megawati.

Discussions also touched upon Morocco's upcoming role as a co-host of the 2030 World Cup, alongside topics such as green energy, global warming impacts, and food security. Ambassador Houssaini presented Megawati with a framed photograph commemorating President Soekarno's visit. Megawati acknowledged the significant number of Indonesian students pursuing Islamic and Arab studies in Morocco, describing the country as relatively open. She expressed a hope for Asian and African nations to reconvene as a "third world power," envisioning a bloc that could potentially grow from the initial 26 nations of the Bandung Conference to over 100.
