Moroccan Footballer Drowns Trying to Reach Spanish Coast

The Moroccan women's football scene is in mourning after the tragic death of young player Faten Ben Amar El Azizi. She drowned while attempting to swim from Fnideq, Morocco, to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Her club, Maghreb Atlético Tetuán (MAT), expressed sorrow, stating that Faten was not seeking fame or adventure, but "a better life and a future that she believed awaited her on the other side of the border." Her dream, the club lamented, "ended before it began" as her journey concluded "after losing her life during an attempt to reach the city of Ceuta."

Faten's death is one of at least 67 fatalities reported by Spanish authorities during an unprecedented crisis that saw an estimated 60,000 people cross the border between Morocco and Ceuta. Morocco has remained largely silent on the crisis, with no official response from consulted institutions regarding the number of victims, injured, or missing on Moroccan territory. Moroccan media, however, report at least 17 deaths, primarily from drowning during the crossing from Fnideq to Ceuta, in addition to bodies found in Spanish territory.

As the border gradually returns to normal, some individuals are seen near the crossing, searching for news of loved ones, many of whom are young and have been missing for days. Faten's club mourned the "high price" paid by many young people in irregular migration attempts, which they said turn "dreams into nightmares" and "joy into tears."
