Moroccan King Pardons 1,788 Individuals on Throne Day

On the occasion of the Glorious Throne Day, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has issued a royal pardon affecting 1,788 individuals. This significant act of clemency extends to both those currently detained and those who are at liberty, who had been sentenced by various courts throughout the Kingdom of Morocco.

The Ministry of Justice released a statement detailing the scope of the pardon. Of the 1,788 individuals, 1,679 are currently in detention. Among them, 9 inmates have had the remainder of their prison sentences waived, while 1,668 inmates received a reduction in their sentences. Additionally, one death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, and another life sentence was reduced to a fixed prison term.

The pardon also benefits 109 individuals who are not in detention. This group includes 41 people who are pardoned from their prison sentences or the remaining part thereof. Another 10 individuals are pardoned from their prison sentences but will still have to pay fines. Furthermore, 52 individuals are pardoned from fines, and 6 individuals are pardoned from both prison sentences and fines.

This royal pardon is a customary gesture by the Moroccan monarch during significant national and religious occasions, such as the Throne Day, which commemorates the King's accession to the throne. It symbolizes the King's role as a source of mercy and justice for his people, reinforcing the bond between the monarchy and the populace.
