European holidaymakers seeking budget-friendly options this summer may find Portugal's Algarve region to be the most cost-effective destination, according to a new study by Post Office Travel Money. The analysis, which examined the price of ten tourist items in 22 European locations, found that the Algarve offered the lowest overall cost for these common holiday expenses.

The study included items such as coffee, beer, wine, sunscreen, and family meals, with flight and accommodation costs excluded. In the Algarve, these ten products totaled nearly 164 euros. A cup of coffee was priced at just 1.49 euros, and a family lunch for two adults averaged around 24.5 euros. Sunscreen was listed at 11.64 euros.

Prices vary greatly between the European resorts analyzed. We recommend that tourists research prices before their holiday, so they know how much cash they need.

Bulgaria's Sunny Beach secured the second spot with a total cost of nearly 166 euros, offering the cheapest family dinner with drinks at 85 euros. Spain also featured prominently, with eight destinations making the list of affordable options. Costa Teguise in Lanzarote ranked third (172 euros), followed by Menorca in fourth and Costa Brava in fifth place.

Conversely, Sorrento in Italy emerged as the most expensive destination, with the same basket of goods costing 314 euros, nearly double that of the Algarve. Prices have also risen in Malta and Ibiza. The study highlighted significant price variations, with differences between destinations reaching up to 92%. Laura Plunkett, head of Post Office Travel Money, advised tourists to research prices beforehand to manage their cash needs, noting that Portuguese and Spanish resorts, along with Bulgarian Black Sea resorts, offer good value this season.
