Mother and Disabled Son Die in Seoul Apartment Fire

A tragic fire in a Seoul apartment building has claimed the lives of a mother and her son. The 60-year-old mother, who reportedly had a physical disability, and her 30-year-old son were discovered in a state of cardiac arrest in a garden area outside the 15th-floor apartment where the blaze occurred.

Fire officials reported that the fire broke out around 4:55 PM on August 11th in the Gangseo-gu district. The mother and son were transported to a hospital but could not be saved. Investigators believe they may have fallen while attempting to escape the flames. Neighbors described the son as the primary caregiver for his mother due to her mobility issues.

The apartment was home to a three-person household, including the couple and their son, who were recipients of basic living support. The 60-year-old husband was reportedly out of the residence at the time of the fire. One adjacent resident was treated for smoke inhalation, and approximately 40 other residents were evacuated from the building, which is over 30 years old.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze completely by 6:08 PM. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the police and fire authorities. The incident has prompted concern over fire safety in older residential buildings.
