Mother's Endurance and Sacrifice: Honoring Vietnam's Heroic Mothers

The Monument of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers in Da Nang stands as a powerful tribute to the immense sacrifices made during wartime, particularly honoring Nguyen Thi Thu. She is a symbol of maternal resilience, having sent nine sons, a son-in-law, and two grandsons to the battlefield, none of whom returned.

During July, a month dedicated to commemorating war invalids and fallen soldiers, the monument complex draws thousands of visitors. People from across Vietnam, including veterans and tourists, come to offer incense and pay their respects. The solemn atmosphere within the memorial space is palpable, with many moved to tears by the stories and relics of war.

Just one child sacrificed is heart-wrenching.

Displayed within the monument are personal artifacts such as letters, backpacks, notebooks, and medals, each telling a part of the nation's painful yet proud history. The central granite monument, weighing 20,000 tons, is shaped like a mother's embrace, symbolizing boundless maternal love and the nation's hope for reunification after conflict.

One particularly poignant exhibit features Nguyen Thi Thu sitting with nine bowls of rice, representing her nine sons lost to the war. The memorial space itself houses the names of nearly 50,000 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers nationwide and hundreds of wartime relics, creating a deeply moving experience for visitors like Pham Thi Kim Dung, who described her grief as "heart-wrenching" at the thought of a mother losing even one child, let alone twelve relatives.
