Vietnamese veteran hopes to find fallen comrades still in Cambodia

Đặng Văn Thắng, a Vietnamese veteran who fought in Cambodia, carries the deep-seated hope of locating and bringing home the remains of his comrades who perished on foreign soil. Thắng, who returned from the battlefield with significant injuries, including the loss of a leg, attended a recent gathering in Ho Chi Minh City for veterans and families of fallen soldiers.

The event, organized by the Traditional Liaison Committee of Division 5 and the Ho Chi Minh City Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs and Veterans, commemorated the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs' Day. Despite facing personal hardships after his return, Thắng has maintained a resilient spirit, working diligently to rebuild his life and embodying the principle of being "disabled but not useless."

What weighs most heavily on the former soldier's mind is the fate of his fellow fighters whose remains have yet to be found and repatriated from Cambodia. "These past few days, I've been following the news about the search and collection of martyrs' remains... I am very happy that the remains of our comrades have finally been found for burial. There are still many fallen soldiers in Cambodia whose remains have not been found, including my comrades. My greatest hope is to find them soon and bring them home," Thắng shared.

Organizations like the Ho Chi Minh City Association for Supporting Families of Martyrs and Veterans have been actively involved in locating and repatriating remains. In the past two years, they have assisted in identifying over 200 martyrs and supported the recovery and repatriation of more than 140 sets of remains. These efforts are part of a broader national commitment to honor those who sacrificed their lives, ensuring they are brought back to their homeland for proper burial.
