Remains of Female Guerrilla Fighter Nguyen Thi Ut Found in Can Tho, Vietnam

After more than three days of intensive searching, Vietnamese authorities in Can Tho have successfully recovered the remains of Nguyen Thi Ut, a female guerrilla fighter who was killed by enemy aircraft fire in 1969. The discovery marks the end of a dedicated effort to locate her final resting place.

The remains were found in Truong Tho Hamlet, Truong Long Tay Commune, following a joint operation between the Can Tho City Military Command and the K90 team from the Political Department of the 9th Military Region Command. The search was prompted by information provided by war veteran Tran Van Quan, 77, who shared details about the soldier's burial site.

Quan, who was a deputy squad leader in the Tan Hoa Commune guerrilla team in 1969, recounted the incident. He described how enemy aircraft strafed the area, hitting shelters where three soldiers were located. During this attack, Nguyen Thi Ut, also known as Ut Mom, was killed, while another soldier sustained a leg injury. Witnesses confirmed her birth year as 1950.

Following her death, local official Mui Ke temporarily buried Nguyen Thi Ut's body in an area belonging to Nam Nhung in the Bo Xoai canal region, now part of Truong Tho Hamlet. Local residents and witnesses corroborated the account of the burial of a fallen soldier in the vicinity, confirming the historical context of the event.
