Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Again on Tuesday Morning

Mount Anak Krakatau erupted again early Tuesday, prompting Indonesia's Geological Agency to warn people to stay away from the volcano's active crater.

The eruption occurred at 5:34 a.m. local time on Sept. 8. The eruption column could not be observed, but the event registered on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 44 millimeters and lasted 10 seconds.

The agency recommended that residents, tourists and climbers avoid the volcano and all activity within a 3-kilometer radius of the active crater.

The latest eruption followed a continuous eruptive episode in the Sunda Strait that lasted about 25 hours. The Geological Agency said the episode began at 11:07 p.m. on Sept. 4 and ended at 12:04 a.m. on Sept. 6.

After that episode ended, volcanic activity returned to a Strombolian pattern, marked by three recorded eruption earthquakes. The agency interpreted the shift as a sign that the prolonged phase of continuous eruptions had ended, while warning that the probability of additional eruptions remained high.
